World Non-violence Day is celebrated on 2 October, the birthday of Mahatma Gandhi, for his contribution towards peace and non-violence. It is also known as the International Day of Non-violence. In 2007, the United Nations General Assembly decided to observe 2 October as the International Day of Non-violence. It was celebrated for the first time in 2008.
The General Assembly asks all members of the UN to observe this day to spread the message of non-violence and peace through public awareness. The principle of non-violence rejects the use of physical violence to achieve social or political change. Non-violent action can be achieved through protests, persuasion, and non-cooperation. Many people, governments, and non-government organizations around the world observe the International Day of Non-violence through various events and activities such as news articles and broadcast, public lectures, seminars, discussions, photo exhibitions highlighting issues, and multi-faith prayer meetings.
