Mahatma Gandhi with his 78 volunteers started Dandi March from Sabarmati Ashram on March 12, 1930, to violate the Salt law at sea coast of Dandi (Gujrat). The name of his 78 volunteers is available on the website www.mkgandhi.org. The number and names of few satyagrahi with their respective states are as follows- Gujrat-31, Maharashtra-13, U.P.-8, Kacch-6, Kerala-4, Punjab-3, Rajputana-3, Bombay-2 (Dadubhai and Hiralal Mahimtura), Sindh-1 (Anand Hingorani), Nepal-1 (Mahaveer), Tamil Nadu-1 (Tapan Nayar), Andhra-1 (Subramanyam), Utkal-1 (Motibasdas), Kamataka-1 (Mahadev Martand), Bihar-1 (Girivardhari Chaudhary), Bengal-1 (Durgesh Chandra Das).
