The revolt was started on 4 June, 1857 in Oudh (Lucknow). The mutiny was led by Begum Hazrat Mahal. She crowned her minor son Birjis Qadir as royal heir and took charge of the affair of the state of Oudh. Later British General Campbell reannexed Lucknow with the help of Gorkha regiment on 21 March, 1858.
