In 1918, at Lonavala District Conference, Tilak had a discussion on the problem of untouchability with Y.R. Shinde who established the Depressed Class Mission (October 18, 1906). Tilak agreed to offer his cooperation in his way. The first depressed classes conference was held in Bombay near French Bridge, on 24th and 25th March, 1918. While addressing the conference, Tilak declared that untouchability should go. He said that all Indians are children of the same motherland.
