The Government of India Act 1935 was originally passed in August, 1935 and is said to have been the longest (British) Act of Parliament ever enacted by that time. The most significant aspects of the Act were :
The grant of a large measure of autonomy to the provinces of British India which ended the system of dyarchy introduced by the Government of India Act, 1919. Provision of direct elections was made.
A partial reorganization of the provinces.
The establishment of a Federal Court.
