Murshid Quli Khan was the first Nawab of Bengal. He emerged as the ruler of Bengal under the Mughals. The Nawabs of Bengal were the rulers of the then provinces of Bengal and Orissa. They served as the rulers of the subah (or province) of Bengal from 1717 to 1765. However, they were only nominally subservient to the Mughal Empire. Siraj ud-Daulah was the ending independent Nawab of Bengal. He was betrayed by Mir Jafar in the Battle of Plassey.
