Avtar Singh Cheema was the first India to climb Mount Everest. He leads a successful expedition on 20 May 1965. Avtar Singh Cheema was a part of the third mission undertaken by the Indian Army, in 1965, to climb Mt. Everest after two failed attempts. Bachendri Pal is known as 1st Indian female to climb Mt. Everest. Tenzing Norgay was a Nepalese citizen at the time of climbing. He was given Indian Passport by the Indian Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru and was made the training Director of the honorable Himalayan Mountaineering Institute which trained some of the first Everesters from India.
