Karan Singh was the first governor of Jammu and Kashmir. When India got independent from British, Hari Singh was the Maharaja of Jammu and Kashmir. Maharat Hari Singh remained so until 17 November 1952. Karan Singh was the son of Maharaj Hari Singh, although from 20 June 1949 Karan Singh acted as regent from 17 November 1952 to 30 March 1965. He was the elected head of state of Jammu and Kashmir titled as Sadr-e-Riyasat. Karan Singh became the first Governor of Jammu and Kashmir on 30 March 1965.
