Gulzarilal Nanda was the first deputy chairman of planning commission. He holds office from 17 February 1953 to 21 September 1963. Later He became the Minister of Planning. Chairman of Planning Commission happened to be the head of the ruling government, Prime Minister of India. No more Planning commission now. Now Planning Commission has been changed into NITI Aayog. Since the prime minister happens to be the ex-officio chairperson of Planning Commission of India so the deputy chairperson is appointed by the central cabinet. The last and current deputy chairman of Planning Commission is Mr Montek Singh Ahluwalia.
