The defence of the INA prisoners was taken up by the Congress and Bhulabhai Desai, Tej Bahadur Sapru, K.N. Katju, Nehru and Asaf Ali appeared in court at the historic Red Fort trials. The growing Nationalist sentiments developed into violent confrontations with authority and pressure from the political parties from India; Lord Wavell was forced to commute the sentences of the defendants by using privileged authority.
