Chhota Nagpur area was ruled by chiefs of various aboriginal tribes who revolted against British colonial expansion in their areas. The king of Porhat strongly opposed British possession of Singhbhumi. This revolt began in 1820, continued till 1836 which spread over to Ranchi, Singbhumi, Hazaribagh, Palamau and Manbhumi western regions. Thousands of tribal inhabitant were killed during the suppression of revolt and colonial rule was re-established there.
