Indian National Congress, was founded in 1885 by A.O. Hume, who was a retired civilian officer. The first session of the Indian National Congress was held in Bombay on 28 December, 1885 at Gokul Das Tejpal Sanskrit College with 72 representative delegates in attendance. Hume assumed office as the General Secretary and Womesh Chandra Bannerjee was elected as president.
