A-Z List of Countries and Capitals Cities

There are 195 countries in the world today. This total comprises 193 countries that are member states of the United Nations and two countries that are non-member observer states: the Holy See and the State of Palestine.

A country (nation) is a zone that is known as a distinct national entity in political geography. A nation may be an independent sovereign state or part of a larger country. Non-sovereign state or a geographic region associated with sets of previously independent or differently associated people with distinct political characteristics. Regardless of the physical geography, in the modern internationally admitted legal definition as defined by the League of Nations in 1937 and reaffirmed by the United Nations in 1945, a resident of a nation is subject to the independent exercise of legal jurisdiction.

Sometimes a nation has known both to sovereign states and to other political entities and other times it known only to states. As the CIA World Factbook uses the word in its “Country name” field to refer to “a wide variety of dependencies, areas of special sovereignty, uninhabited islands, and other entities in addition to the traditional countries or independent states.”
